Rationale

My selected nursery rhyme for this assignment was Humpty Dumpty as it is heavily nostalgic for me and reminds me of many fond childhood memories. Through initial brainstorming I immediately connected the rhyme with a similar intended riddle that I read in The Hobbit when I was younger:

"A box without hinges, key or lid
yet a golden treasure inside is hid."

Through research I discovered that Humpty Dumpty was also initially a riddle around an egg. I felt it was very fitting to continue with my idea generation looking at both these riddles side by side.

I decided to stick with the modern interpretation of the rhyme showing Humpty Dumpty as a fragile Egg man, while incorporating a sinister twist to the plot. I portray the King as greedy and willing to do anything to get what he wants, sacrificing the innocent Humpty Dumpty just for the possibility that the carries an untold amount of treasures. The final scene in the animation ends on a humorous tone to create a almost sickening feeling in the viewer as it is conflicting whether you should laugh or not. This adds another layer of sinister intent of the story. This is commenting on how many people in a modern context base all they do around wealth and the constant want for more money. Many people go to very extreme lengths affecting not just themselves but the people around them, just to obtain what they think they need.

I chose to use a style of illustration that is commonly linked with childrens books, especially since I used Quinten Blake as my artist model who illustrates Roald Dahl's books for children. The reasoning behind this is that the style hints at innocence so the actions of the King are dramatasised. The music mimics this dramatic context and builds suspense throughout the animation.

The aim of this animation is to get people to look at themselves and question whether their morals and life ideals are something that could potentially cause harm or may be already having a negative affect.
