"Society of Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals"
Some points I picked up throughout the visit..
- All animals adopted out are all healthy and don't carry any diseases etc.
- 100% donation funded
- Open to animals that need treatment or in a vulnerable situation
- They desex, mircochip and vaccinate all cats and dogs that come through
- SNAP- Spayed and Neuter All Pets
- Lost cost to pet owners
- TNR- Trap, Neuter, Return
- For wild cats that are being fed in a community
- Desex them to prevent more wild cats roaming the streets
- Some animals that come through have to get put down
- Suffering from a terminal illness and their quality of living is very low
- Close to 100 volunteers
- 617 animals in foster care
- Available pet practice on site open for the public to use
- Helps to raise funds
- Educating owners is a very important part of their rescue system
- Sometimes people can be very ignorant
- There is a possibilty of sentencing owners for animal abuse
- Doesn't happen very often because a lot of funds are needed
I asked if the SPCA has anything to do with animals that are rescued from any product testing environments:
- More something ethics communities deal with eg. animal activists
- NZ is lucky, there is very strict control on animal testing
- The licence needed to test on animals is very difficult to obtain
- One time they did nurse 60 inbred chihuahuas but they were from a breeder
