Aesthetic Research

From the research I did into animals that have been rescued from cosmetic testing I though an appropriate aesthetic would be a dark, eerie type style.

Through this gathering of images, I decided I still want to keep a sort of cute, almost lovable aspect to my character design. Such as animations as Frankenweenie (bottom left of existing characters) really play to this sort of design which creates the audience to become emphatic toward Frankenweenie, much like I want the audience to be toward the rescued animals of the SPCA.

Among my reasearch I also discovered this blog post
of someone else's research into a similar aesthetic I am looking at. I found it extremely useful into finding specific animations or animators that resonate to my wanted character design.

A few things I picked out from the post that especially interested me:

Happy End, 1959, by Zagreb Films

Director & Scriptwriter- Vatroslav Mimica
Design- Aleksandar Marks
Backgrounds- Zlatko Bourek
Animation- Vladimir Jutrisa

Although this example is purely black and white the way that the scenes are rendered creates a lot of interesting aspects. I really love the delicate feature making a creepy environment yet there is something still cute about it.

Tifusari, 1963, by Zagreb Films

Director & Scriptwriter- Vatroslav Mimica
Design and Backgrounds- Aleksandar Marks
Animation- Vladimir Jutrisa

I purely chose this example because the textures in it are so engaging and really excite me. To be able to incorporate something like this into my character design would be amazing but not sure how easy that's going to be. For now it can just be inspiration for silhouette shapes I can use for my character.

Peur(s) du Noir, 2007

This animation uses really strong silhouettes and well as playing with negative and positive space. MORE inspiration for my character silhouette.

On Ruben's blog that I discovered, I also found this post on his experimentation with the silhouettes of his two characters. I thought his approach was very unique and added a lot of randomness, what he called 'happy accidents'. This is definitely something I want to look into and possibly play around with in this assignment to enhance my overall character design.
