Fortunately for me, Unity has an online asset store were you able to download characters to use in Unity, some even for free! Huzzah!

I managed to get my little robot man into Unity pretty easily, but I purposely chose this model as it didnt have any animations associated with it so I could start from scratch it that area.
However, I went to try open the fbx model in Maya but it didn't recognise the file type. After some more research I discovered I need to download a fbx converter plugin for Maya to easily transfer files between it and Unity
