So, I managed to get my character into Maya and it came with a rig as well. Initially I thought, "Oh joy! I dont have to rig or weight paint!" but unfortunately this moment of elation was very temporary. The rig was already attached to the skin but did not have any IK handles or any joint controls. At first I thought this wouldnt be too much of a hassle to fix up, that was until I realised how shit the rig was. The supposed t-position it is in, has bent arms and the legs are bent outwards instead of forwards making it impossible to create an IK handle that effects the joints in the right direction.
I could detach the rig from the skin, move the joints then attach it back up again, which would mean I would have to redo the weight painting. This would be plausible, however, it would make much more sense to start from scratch with a different character (in an actual t-position) and use the setup for game machine which will be specifically for game design that also has build in controls. I will have to do this at uni, where I currently am not, so is a wee setback but a manageable one. I hope.
